New! In the 1960s, the draft became the focal point for opposition to the Vietnam War. But contrary to popular belief, resistance to the draft actually began during the Civil War. Another myth is that America volunteered en masse for both world wars, when in fact the vast majority of soldiers were drafted. In 1969, a Presidential Commission recommended ending the draft, and in 1973 the All-Volunteer force became a reality. But the debate over military conscription continues today.
