Closed Captioned: English
How do you determine the truth when opposing information is presented?

Like Galileo before him, no one believed Dr. Barry Marshall. They proclaimed it was settled. Everyone already knew the answer to his question: ulcers come from stress.

But Dr. Marshall believed in his research so much that he used himself as a guinea pig. Following the scientific method, he, along with his research partner Dr. Robin Warren, created an experiment to prove his hypothesis. Marshall drank a huge dose of H. pylori bacteria.

Unlike Galileo, Dr. Marshall didn’t end up living the rest of his life under house arrest. He only ended up with an ulcer – which he also knew how to cure – and ultimately a Nobel prize.

How many people have benefited from his steadfast determination to prove he was right, to diligently follow the scientific method, and his refusal to accept the idea that science can be forever settled?
